My holiday has been cancelled.
There isn't anything I can do about the flights, they are all bought and paid for. I've nowhere to stay if I were to still go over. So I'll carry my holiday entitlement forward into the next academic year and go into work instead. I couldn't face the idea of sitting at home during my time-off, all the while thinking about where else I was originally supposed to be. I'll just split it up and have a few long weekends.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.
-- Hector Berlioz
People are more violently opposed to fur than leather because it's safer to harass rich women than motorcycle gangs.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
-- Dandemis
Skeptical scrutiny is the means, in both science and religion, by which deep insights can be winnowed from deep nonsense.
-- Carl Sagan (1934 - 1996)
Just a bit of fun.
Does anyone have better questions?
- Pick one of your scars. How did you get it?
A 1" long on the back of my thumb on my right hand. Trying to open a tin of Spag Bol. I didn't know it at the time, but the stuff in the tin was nearly as harmful to me as the tin's lid. I still get twinges in my thumb two years later.
- What is on the walls in your room/home?
Nothing really. No artwork. I've got a wall clock in the living room. Do bookcases count? They sort of lean against the wall.
I'm still an atheist, thank God.
-- Luis Bunuel (1900 - 1983)
Please write again soon. Though my own life is filled with activity, letters encourage momentary escape into others lives and I come back to my own with greater contentment.
-- Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, 'A Woman of Independent Means'
You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.
-- Plato (427 BC - 347 BC)
When the heart speaks, the mind finds it indecent to object.
This song was in the show last night. It was the favorite song of a friend from college in the late 80's, Ann. She's been gone a long time. I was a slightly troubled and rebellious teenager when Ann and the other two students on our course took me under their wing. Ann and Christean 'mothered' me, and helped to sort me out, while Alan was like a brother. I was the youngest in the class by a margin of fifteen years.
Anger makes you smaller, while forgiveness forces you to grow beyond what you were.

Do not weep; do not wax indignant. Understand.
-- Baruch Spinoza (1632 - 1677)
Courage is the power to let go of the familiar.

Isn't it interesting that the same people who laugh at science fiction listen to weather forecasts and economists?

Show was brilliant. :D
Am now on to reading Pratchett's The Truth. :)
Didn't have a chance to have my diner before going to the theatre, and now it's too late to try eating anything. :(
Need to go to work tomorrow, lots of work to do. Strangely I really want to get on with it. I like restructuring and rewriting my entire PERLLIB whilst migrating my website to a new server. All the while trying to keep up with all the service requests that keep coming in and trying to bring Alex completely up to speed so he can cover for me when I'm out of the country for nearly three weeks. :)
"A Night At The Movies" is the Dunfermline Youth Theatre's show that starts tonight for three nights. It is in the Carnegie Hall.
I don't have a ticket yet, so I better make sure I get there in time to get my own ticket beforehand. Stephen from the DDS plays a few parts in some of the numbers.
Experience has no text books nor proxies. She demands that her pupils answer to her roll-call personally.

Sometimes it is harder to deprive oneself of a pain than of a pleasure.

At last I've finished Perdido Street Station. A very good book and a very well detailed city. But it is so damn depressing towards the end! A very dark urban fantasy.
I will probably read other books by the same other, even in the same setting. But not for a while I think.
